Our Process
Building or renovating your home is a big investment, and choosing the right builder early in the process can make a significant difference to the final outcome.
At Finz Carpentry, we work with homeowners across Cambridge, Hamilton, and the wider Waikato on new builds, home renovations, extensions, kitchen renovations, bathroom renovations, and more detailed residential building projects. Our process is designed to help you understand what is involved, make informed decisions early, and move forward with confidence.
Initial Enquiry
The first step is to tell us a little more about your project. Our project enquiry form helps us understand what you are planning, where the project is located, what stage you are at, your expected timeframe, whether you already have plans or consent documentation, and what budget range you are working within.
We want this to feel helpful rather than intimidating. You do not need to have all the answers before getting in touch. If you already have plans, photos, or a clear brief, that is great — but if not, that is completely fine too. Anything you are unsure about can be left blank.
This helps us determine whether we are likely to be the right fit for your project and how best to guide you through the next step.
Start Your Project EnquiryInitial Consultation
Once we have reviewed your enquiry, we will usually arrange an initial consultation to talk through your project in more detail.
This is an opportunity to discuss your ideas, site, budget, timing, and any early questions you may have. It also gives us a chance to explain how we work and what information may be needed before accurate pricing or construction planning can begin.
Early Feasibility / Ballpark Estimate
If you are still in the early stages, we may be able to provide a broad, non-binding indication of likely project costs.
This is not a formal quote, but it can be a useful first step in understanding whether your project is realistic before committing too far into the design, consent, or pricing process.
This stage can be particularly helpful if you are considering a new build, home renovation, extension, kitchen renovation, bathroom renovation, or larger residential project in Cambridge, Hamilton, or the wider Waikato.
Preliminary Services Agreement
Where a project requires further planning before detailed pricing can be confirmed, we may recommend a Preliminary Services Agreement.
This can cover the pre-construction work needed to move your project forward, such as working through design information, reviewing plans, liaising with designers or consultants, considering buildability, refining specifications, and preparing the project for detailed pricing.
This stage is especially useful if you do not yet have full plans, consent documentation, or a complete scope of works.
Detailed Cost Analysis / QS Pricing
Once enough information is available, we can organise a more detailed cost analysis. This may include an independent QS report, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
This helps provide a clearer understanding of likely construction costs before moving into a building contract. It can also be useful for finance, budgeting, scope decisions, and comparing different design or specification options.
Where required, this would usually form part of a Preliminary Services Agreement or paid pre-construction stage.
Contract Options
Once the project scope, documentation, and pricing are sufficiently developed, we can discuss the most suitable contract option.
Depending on the project, this may be a fixed-price contract or a cost-plus/open-book contract. The right approach depends on the level of detail available, the type of work involved, and how much flexibility is needed during the build.
We will explain the options clearly so you can make an informed decision before committing to construction.
Construction and Project Management
During construction, Finz Carpentry manages the build process, subcontractors, communication, quality checks, progress claims, and day-to-day coordination.
We aim to keep the process clear, organised, and well-managed from start to finish, whether it is a new home, renovation, extension, or more detailed residential building project.
Handover and Aftercare
At completion, we work through the final details, handover process, warranties, guarantees, and any required documentation.
Our goal is to deliver a high-quality finished project and make sure you feel supported through the final stages of the build and beyond.
